Enzo is the diminutive of Don Vincenzo, whose signature appears
on the back label. In the warm land of south Italy the nickname
Don is still used to address a real gentleman with ancient
family traditions and known as a wise and honest person. Don Vincenzo
had been one of the best friends of Luigi Biscardo, my father, since
the beginning of the 50¹s. Don Vincenzo was born in Sicily
and he had a deep knowledge of the characteristic vineyards and
wines of southern Italy. He was an excellent winemaker and expert
in the vinification of native grapes, such as Nero d¹Avola,
Grillo and other typical Sicilian grapes.
During his long career Luigi Biscardo encouraged him to focus on
some Salento (Puglia) vineyards, such as Primitivo and Negroamaro.
Little by little his expertise and passion, together with his deep
friendship with the Biscardo family, assured the creation of wines
of superb quality that mirrored all the features of their terroir.
He never followed the bottling procedures in first person, because
marketing was not his priority. He used to say that the vineyard
produces the grapes, not the bottle!
